Discovery Addresses Megalodon Controversy in New Special

After 2013’s Shark Week special “Megalodon: The Monster Lives” there was a backlash from the online community. Some claimed that the Shark Week feature about the Megalodon, an ancient 60-ton shark that once conquered the prehistoric seas, did not fully present itself as fictional. While the great beast did once exist, it has not reemerged as the special suggested.

This year, for Discovery’s 30th Anniversary of Shark Week we present “Megalodon: Fact vs. Fiction” to address head-on the falsities that surround this creature’s mythos. Over one hour, Discovery and Pilgrim Media Group will present the truth as we know it now about this fascinating extinct animal.

Joseph Schneier, Discovery’s Vice President of Development and Production told the Washington Post, “We have a program we were proud of. So we wanted to own the fact that there was some controversy, and that it was clearly a scripted program with actors in it . . . but then dive into the science of the show and the real fish.”

“Megalodon: Fact vs. Fiction” airs this Friday, July 27th at 8/7c on the Discovery Channel.
